Based in Denton, Detective Inspector Jack Frost is under pressure to meet targets and keep bosses in the division off his back.

Frost is a widower who, despite his grumpy personality and addiction to work, is still attractive to the opposite sex. His shyness is a recurrent theme and it usually takes him an entire episode to summon the courage to ask a lady out for a date. Each episode contains at least two plots which revolve around a murder, although executive producer David Jason insists there is little graphic violence.

Episode 1: Mind Games
Inspector Jack Frost reopens an unsolved murder case when the remains of a 14-year-old girl, who went missing 20 years ago, are discovered on a housing development. With the lead suspect back on the streets after serving a prison sentence for the murder of the teenager's best friend, the inspector becomes more determined than ever to put the case to rest. Meanwhile, the detectives investigate when a late-night prank results in the death of a local businessman.

Episode 2: Dead End
Frost isn't happy when he has to work with DS Marsh after they have clashed in the past. They try to put the past behind them when they investigate the kidnapping of a bus driver and his conductress. They also look at the murder of children's entertainer.

Episode 3: In the Public Interest.
The naked bodies of three men are found placed in the shape of a triangle, leading Jack to suspect the work of a satanic cult. Meanwhile, press baron James Callum's plans to make his mark on the local area are hindered by an investigation into his lover's death in a houseboat fire - and the suspicious demise of his former girlfriend may be the key to finding the killer.
