The weather is warming up and that means the time to go to the beach and the pool has arrived. While you are spending a lazy afternoon at the pool, here are a couple tips to keep you and your family safe.

- Never take your eyes off your children: It takes only moments for a child to drown. Never assume that someone else is watching you child. Always know where rescue equipment is located, in case of an emergency. At the Village pools the life ring and pole are located on either side of the pool.

- Proper swimwear: At the Village pools, small children are required to wear a swim diaper in the pool. There are also special swimsuits available that have flotation devices built in to help you child stay afloat. However, this does not mean that children should be left unsupervised.

- Apply sunscreen: Even if it is overcast outside, harmful UV rays are getting through the clouds. Always make sure you apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater and you reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours as well as after getting in the water. Waterproof formulas are available to protect you while swimming.

- Stay hydrated: If you are going to be out in the sun for any amount of time, stay hydrated. Dehydration can happen rapidly and may result in headache and fatigue.

- Education for Prevention: There are many programs offered throughout the community that teach children and adults how to swim and CPR.
